An intense Waikondo Warrior, this man has his face smeared with a mix of pig fat and ground charcoal to create a dramatic effect. During the second day of the Sing Sing festival in Goroka, Stephen was attacked and held up at gunpoint by local men who wanted to rob him. He lost a tooth in the battle to defend himself. This painting was created with the idea not only to capture the Warrior’s proud appearance, but also born out of the need to express the dark experience of what happened there and of his feelings of mistrust for months afterwards.
