This Barabaig child is very androgynous in appearance like many children in Tanzania of this age. Stephen was even he was fooled by the child’s appearance when they met. Having thought it was a girl whilst making the painting, he later discovered on his video footage that the child is in fact a boy!
The red ‘shuka’ on the boy’s head is evidence to those who know the Barabaig tribe that the child is certainly a boy.
