This Nama/ Hottentot man lives near Fish River Canyon in Southern Namibia. Bennett was introduced to him by Manny Goldbeck, of Canyon Lodge, who visits neighbouring locals regularly to monitor their health and well-being.
The area is very arid and water is scarce. Bennett felt that this landscape was reflected in the old man’s wrinkled face. His hat is home-made and frames his face well. The man’s almond shape eyes are very typical of his tribe, and as such, are described as “Hottentot eyes.” He is incredibly photogenic and the artist soon realizes that this face is soon to become the subject of one of his greatest paintings.
